How to Find Filler in a Classic Car (Panel-by-Panel)

TL;DR: "Body's solid, mate" is a claim, not a fact — and on a forty-year-old shell the only way to find filler in a classic car without a stripdown is to measure for it. Classic-car readings are different — set expectations first

On a modern car, 130 μm is normal and 400 μm is a red flag. A classic that has lived four decades may carry two or three honest resprays: 250–400 μm of accumulated, evenly-spread paint on outer panels can be entirely innocent. What filler looks like is not "thick" but locally extreme and uneven:

The panel-by-panel rot route

Filler follows rust, and rust on British classics follows the same water traps every time. Probe these in order — grid each area with readings a few centimetres apart:

  1. Rear wheel arches. The classic skim zone. Measure around the full lip and a hand-width out onto the quarter — arch repairs get feathered wide.
  2. Sills, outer and (visually) inner. Structural on most monocoque classics — a Mini or MGB with filler-bridged sills is a welding project wearing paint. Spikes here change the price conversation completely, and a magnet in a cloth is a fair cross-check on box sections the probe cannot follow.
  3. Front wings, lower third. Mud-trap territory behind the headlamps and ahead of the doors on most 60s–80s shells.
  4. Front and rear valances. Cheap to repair badly, so they often are.
  5. Door skins, bottom edge. Drain holes block, skins rot from inside, and a smear of filler hides it for one more summer.
  6. Seams and shut lines. Factory seam lines under filler (a smoothed-over drip rail, a "cleaned" seam) show as continuous high ridges in the readings — restoration-taste decisions the next owner inherits.

Log readings on a sketch as you go. Twenty minutes with gauge and notebook produces the document every classified advert lacks: where the metal is, where the filler is, and how much of the asking price is paint.

Steel shells, aluminium panels — and what will not read

Plenty of classics mix substrates: aluminium bonnets and boot lids on steel shells (many Land Rovers famously go further, with aluminium alloy body panels over a steel chassis and steel bulkhead). FAQ

Old cars had different paint — do micron rules still apply?

Original single-stage paint on a 60s–70s car can genuinely read thinner than modern systems (sometimes well under 100 μm where original survives). That makes untouched panels an even more useful baseline: filler and respray stand out further against genuinely old paint.

Is heavy filler always a deal-breaker?

No — a skim over a straightened wing on a driver-grade classic is period-normal repair. What matters is where (structural sills vs cosmetic quarters), how much, and whether the price reflects it. Filler over rot, though, always comes back.

Can it verify "matching numbers original paint" claims?

It can support or demolish them: consistent thin readings everywhere are what genuine original paint looks like; a respray on even one panel shows as a family of higher numbers. Concours-level originality calls still deserve a marque specialist's eye alongside the gauge.

Will it find rust that has not been filled yet?
